Day 14 of 14

No Temple Needed: God Dwells Forever

The new creation as the ultimate holy of holies

Today's Reading

Read Revelation 21:1-5 and Revelation 21:22-27. The story that began in a garden ends in a city. And in this city, John notices something extraordinary: "I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb" (21:22).

Reflection

We have traced the temple theme through the entire Bible — from Eden's garden to the altars of the patriarchs, from the tabernacle to Solomon's temple, from the glory departing to the prophetic hope of return, from Jesus the true temple to the church as living stones. Now we arrive at the end, and we discover something that should take our breath away: there is no temple.

"I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb" (Revelation 21:22). After fourteen days of studying the temple, this is the punchline. No temple is needed — because the entire new creation is the temple. The whole city is the holy of holies. The barrier between heaven and earth, which the temple mediated but never fully removed, has been dissolved entirely.

Notice the dimensions. The new Jerusalem is described as a perfect cube — 12,000 stadia in length, width, and height (Revelation 21:16). The only other perfect cube in Scripture is the holy of holies in Solomon's temple (1 Kings 6:20). The entire city is shaped like the inner sanctuary. What was once a single room behind a curtain has become a cosmos.

Wright captures the vision: "The final vision of the Bible is not of souls going up to heaven but of the new Jerusalem coming down to earth. God's space and human space are fused together at last. No temple is needed because the whole city is a temple." This is what Eden was always pointing toward — not merely a garden, but a city; not merely one sacred space, but all of creation suffused with God's glory.

Goldsworthy sees the entire biblical narrative reaching its conclusion: "The absence of a temple in the new creation is not a deficiency but the ultimate fulfilment. The whole of the new creation is the holy of holies — God's unmediated presence fills everything."

And then comes the promise that ties it all together: "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God" (Revelation 21:3). The word for "dwelling place" is skene — tabernacle. God is tabernacling with his people, just as he did in the wilderness, just as the Word did in John 1:14. But now there is no curtain, no restriction, no limit. The exile is over. Eden is restored — and surpassed.

Going Deeper

Look back over the fourteen days of this plan. From Eden to the new creation, the story has one consistent trajectory: God moving toward his people, determined to dwell with them. How does this reshape your understanding of the gospel? Salvation is not merely forgiveness of sins — it is the restoration of God's presence. How does this truth change the way you live today?

Key Quotes

The final vision of the Bible is not of souls going up to heaven but of the new Jerusalem coming down to earth. God's space and human space are fused together at last. No temple is needed because the whole city is a temple.

The absence of a temple in the new creation is not a deficiency but the ultimate fulfilment. The whole of the new creation is the holy of holies — God's unmediated presence fills everything.

Prayer Focus

Thank God that the story ends not with loss but with restoration — not with exile but with home. Pray: 'Come, Lord Jesus. Make all things new.'

Meditation

No temple is needed because God's presence fills everything. What does this reveal about the ultimate goal of redemption?

Question for Discussion

After fourteen days tracing the temple theme, we discover there is no temple in the new creation because the whole city is the holy of holies. How does this final vision redefine what salvation is ultimately about -- not escaping the world, but the world becoming God's dwelling place?
