Day 3 of 14

Proverbs for Daily Life

Work, Words, Relationships

Today's Reading

Read Proverbs 12:18-22: "There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment."

Then read Proverbs 15:1-4: "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouths of fools pour out folly."

Reflection

If the first nine chapters of Proverbs lay the theological foundation — the fear of the Lord, the call of Lady Wisdom — chapters 10-31 bring wisdom down to earth. These are practical observations about daily life: how you speak, how you work, how you handle money, how you treat your neighbors, how you raise your children.

The proverbs about speech are especially numerous — and especially convicting. "There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." Words can wound as deeply as a blade. Every human being knows the lasting pain of a cruel word — and the lasting comfort of a kind one.

J.I. Packer reminds us that God cares about these everyday realities:

"God does not only care about the 'big' spiritual questions. He cares about how you speak to your spouse at breakfast, how you handle your money, and how you treat the person who serves you at a restaurant. That is what Proverbs is about."

"A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." This proverb is easy to quote and almost impossibly difficult to practice — especially in the heat of the moment, when anger floods the body and the tongue is fastest to respond. Spurgeon acknowledges the difficulty:

"A soft answer turneth away wrath. Oh, how many quarrels would be ended if we had but the grace to speak softly! The proverb is simple, but the practice of it demands all the resources of the Holy Spirit."

Proverbs also addresses work: "The hand of the diligent makes rich" (10:4). Honesty: "Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who act faithfully are his delight" (12:22). Friendship: "A friend loves at all times" (17:17). These are not abstract principles. They are road-tested observations about how life works when you align yourself with the grain of reality — the wisdom God has woven into creation.

Going Deeper

Proverbs invites you to pay attention to the small things. The tone of your voice in a disagreement. Whether you tell the truth when a lie would be easier. How you treat the people who have no power to reward you. These daily choices — repeated hundreds of times — form your character. Today, choose one area: speech, work, or relationships. Pick a single proverb and try to live by it for the rest of the day. That is how wisdom is built — one choice at a time.

Key Quotes

God does not only care about the 'big' spiritual questions. He cares about how you speak to your spouse at breakfast, how you handle your money, and how you treat the person who serves you at a restaurant. That is what Proverbs is about.

A soft answer turneth away wrath. Oh, how many quarrels would be ended if we had but the grace to speak softly! The proverb is simple, but the practice of it demands all the resources of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer Focus

Asking God for wisdom in the small, daily interactions that shape your character and your relationships

Meditation

Proverbs says 'a soft answer turns away wrath.' Think of a recent conflict. How might a different tone have changed the outcome?

Question for Discussion

Why do you think the Bible devotes so much attention to the power of words — and how might a small group or church create a culture where speech is genuinely life-giving rather than careless?
